This eager collie, created by Will Rannells, clearly takes joy in its role as a mail carrier, especially when delivering heartfelt valentines! The surprise twist? This charming illustration graced the cover of The Red Cross Magazine in 1920. From 1916 to 1920, this magazine was crucial in sharing stories and information about G.I.s and the collective efforts during World War I. It serves as proof that romance can be found in unexpected places!
Will Rannells (1892-1982) made an enduring impact in art as both an illustrator and an educator. His illustrious career spanned several decades, during which he held the esteemed position of Professor of Commercial Art at Ohio State University for 35 years. Rannells' artistic journey took an intriguing turn when he transitioned from creating illustrations of beautiful girls to dogs, a decision that led to his first commercial success—a captivating portrait of a collie that had previously been in the arms of a girl. His exceptional talent for portraying dogs in heartwarming and playful scenes soon caught the attention of renowned publications like Judge, Life, and McCalls, where his delightful dog portraits adorned their covers for years!
