OUTSIDE GREETING: Happy Anniversary
INSIDE GREETING: I'd follow you to the end of the universe.
This mid-century astronaut couple reflects the era's fascination with the space race. Illustrated by Tran J. Mawicke, they originated from the cover of a Space Happy coloring book. Inside awaited blank pages for coloring featuring Cadet Happy from the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet television and radio show, a popular children's space adventure program that aired from 1950 to 1955. Remarkably, a copy of this coloring book now resides in the National Air and Space Museum. But there's no need to travel to Washington D.C. to enjoy this image—we've reproduced it as a retro kitschy anniversary card!
Tran J. Mawicke (1911-1988) was born in Chicago and studied at the American Academy and Art Institute of Chicago. He got his professional start in advertising in 1929, and his clients included Pepsi-Cola and Camel Cigarettes. He later received assignments from major magazines of the 1930s and 1940s. Then, he transitioned to illustrating for book publishers in the late 1950s. Known primarily for depicting scenes of military life and postwar America, he likely served in WWII, given his age. He served as the president of the Society of Illustrators (still an active organization today!) for a year term.
