Send a vase of flowers in this manner, either instead of or alongside a vase of actual flowers, to a special birthday celebrant! We adapted this greeting card from a 1936 Dimitri Bouchène painting.
Dimitri Bouchène (1893–1993), a Russian-born painter who became a French citizen in 1947, was celebrated for his contributions to set and costume design for theater, ballet, and haute couture. Descended from an aristocratic family, he studied art in Saint Petersburg before immersing himself in the vibrant art scene of Paris in 1912. A pivotal figure in the Mir Iskousstva movement, his artistic journey led him to collaborate with Anna Pavlova and prestigious fashion houses. His wartime involvement in the French Resistance and enduring relationship with art historian and critic Sergey Rostislavovich Ernst defined his later life. Bouchène's passing in 1993 marked the end of a prolific career, leaving behind a legacy of artistic innovation and unwavering commitment, immortalized in the words engraved on his shared grave in Montparnasse Cemetery with Ernst: "What happiness, you came."
