This stately congratulatory card has a fun origin story behind its image: "Knowledge is Power" served as both a personal motto and the cover of Christopher Dresser's influential book, The Art of Decorative Design, published in 1862. We adore it as a bold and unique graduation card!
Christopher Dresser (1834–1904) was a pioneering British designer known for his influential work in industrial design, decorative arts, and design theory. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he studied botany and design at the Government School of Design in London and later at the Royal College of Chemistry. He developed a keen interest in Japanese and Islamic art, which greatly influenced his design philosophy, which is characterized by simplicity, functionality, and geometric patterns. His diverse work spanned furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and wallpaper, and he collaborated with leading manufacturers to produce innovative designs for mass production. His designs were ahead of their time, embracing modern materials and manufacturing techniques, and he played a significant role in shaping the aesthetic principles of the Arts and Crafts movement.
