OUTSIDE GREETING: Toot Your Own Horn
BLANK INSIDE
Encourage a friend to toot, toot, toot away! This image comes from Little Boy with a Big Horn (1950), a timeless Little Golden Book by Jack Bechdolt and illustrated by Aurelius Battaglia. In it, Ollie wants to practice his horn! When the noise disrupts his family, he ventures offshore in a rowboat to practice. But how will he find his way home safely when the fog rolls in? Good thing he has a big horn!
Aurelius Battaglia (1910-1984) was a versatile American illustrator, muralist, writer, and director born to Italian parents in Washington, D.C. His early artistic career began as a caricaturist for local newspapers, where his talent for capturing personalities emerged. During the Great Depression, he secured commissions as a muralist through the Public Works of Art Project. Later, he relocated to California and contributed to the Walt Disney Studios, earning credits as both an artist and writer for several well-known films. We especially admire his work in Little Golden Books, where his distinctive style brought countless stories to life for young readers. The latter years of his life were spent illustrating many charming children's books!
