George Wolfe Plank (1883-1965), a self-taught American artist, earned recognition for his outstanding contributions to magazine illustrations and enjoyed widespread popularity in his lifetime. His notable work with Vogue began in 1911 when he joined the magazine, providing illustrations and cover designs until 1936. Beyond magazines, Plank demonstrated his versatility by creating illustrations for friends' books, contributing to cookbooks with food and drink depictions, designing for the theater, crafting Red Cross posters during WWI, engaging in interior design for society figures, and even illustrating maps! His Vogue covers were so popular that at social events, esteemed women would recreate them in live tableaux vivants, showcasing the lasting impact of his artistic legacy!
