A sweet mermaid picks a flower of the deep surrounded by her fish friends. Her floating hair and soft colors make for a delicate and calm scene in this greeting card. This illustration by Dorothy P. Lathrop (1891-1980) first appeared on the pages of a 1939 edition of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved tale, The Little Mermaid.
Lathrop was an American author and illustrator, known for her children's books and animal illustrations. She was the very first recipient of the Caldecott Medal for illustration in 1938 for her work in Animals of the Bible. A prolific artist in many mediums, Lathrop's art is characterized by her attention to detail and her ability to capture the unique personalities of animals in her illustrations.
