BLANK INSIDE
Paramount Pictures had originally envisioned The War of the Worlds as a silent-era project for Cecil B. DeMille. In the original H.G. Wells novel, the story was set in Victorian England and the proposed DeMille version would have followed suit. But by the time the studio got around to actually making the movie, Orson Welles’ 1938 radio adaptation of the story had become legendary in part because Welles set the tale in modern times. Special effects master George Pal saw the writing on the wall and gave this 1953 Technicolor extravaganza the same treatment with similar successful results.
