In this timeless manger scene, featuring the Away in the Manger lyric "The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay – the little lord Jesus asleep on the hay," Margaret Tarrant's exquisite art captures the serenity of the Holy Family watching over the slumbering Baby Jesus. This scene is just one jewel from Tarrant's collection of religious Christmas images, initially crafted to complement a 1940 book of holiday poems and stories. These beloved illustrations have since graced books, postcards, and calendars, and we are honored to continue the tradition by sharing this heartfelt greeting card with you!
Margaret Tarrant (1888-1959) was a distinguished English artist, nurtured in an artistic milieu as the daughter of Percy Tarrant. Her creative journey began with the illustration of Christmas cards, postcards, and calendars, setting the stage for her remarkable career. However, it was her enchanting book illustrations that truly catapulted her to fame. She's perhaps best known for her exquisite work on The Water Babies (1908), where her artistic prowess breathed life into the story's magical world. Her artistic legacy is defined by her unique ability to transport viewers to a world where fairies, fantasy, and the wonders of childhood reign supreme.
