Description

INSIDE GREETING: When friends meet, hearts warm.

"Hare loved his friends, and his friends loved Hare." This heartwarming sentiment captures the essence of a cross-species celebration from the story Hare's Birthday Party in the book A Forest Story (1929) by Josef Kožíšek. The enchanting illustration that accompanies this tale is the work of the talented artist Rudolf Mates. In both the narrative and the image, we witness the forest friends gathering around thoughtful gifts, including four-leaf clovers for luck, a vibrant bouquet of cyclamens and poppies, and a delicious spread of lettuce, cabbage, and carrots, all shared in the spirit of camaraderie and joy. See this image on a card with a blank interior, perfect for any occasion!

Rudolf Mates (1881-1966) was a Czechoslovakian schoolteacher and accomplished illustrator known for his vibrant and distinctive style. His artistic legacy is particularly evident in his best-known illustrative works, including A Forest Story and The Magic Flutes, both created in the 1920s. Mates' illustrations are characterized by super-saturated colors, achieved through lithography and an unabashedly Bohemian style.
