Mother Helps With The ABCs is yet another captivating illustration by Jessie Willcox Smith that originally graced the October 1921 cover of Good Housekeeping magazine. With an aversion to using professional child models, Smith embraced a more personal approach, inviting friends, relatives, and their children to her home for observation and sketching sessions. The young mother depicted in this artwork could be Smith's own niece, adding an intimate and familial dimension to this endearing scene. See this image on a greeting card!
Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935), a cherished name at Laughing Elephant, wields a remarkable artistic legacy. Mentored by Howard Pyle, an illustrious influence, she emerged as a formidable woman artist in the Golden Age of Illustration, defying norms in a male-dominated realm—she was among the highest-paid illustrators of her time! Beyond the canvas, she left her mark on nearly 200 Good Housekeeping magazine covers while gracing classic children's books and creating artistic ads for iconic brands like Ivory Soap and Kodak. Sensitivity to the human experience and idealized images such as motherhood and childhood archetypes defined her work.
